Faux Mayes Crosses in Indiana and Ohio
A reader of the blog notified me about a “GET RIGHT WITH GOD” cross on I-65, Wolcott, Indiana. He noted that this might be a copycat marker and according to Google Street View it does look indeed newer, and it’s not Mayes style, and it’s on an Interstate instead of an older highway. Certainly, whoever put it up was inspired by Mayes roadside signs and I might be able to connect the dots.

Google Street View shows in its archive that the cross was first recorded in 2021 and 2018 was the previous Street View Recording. In-between those dates, the cross went up.

In my initial research of Mayes remaining crosses, I came across a missing cross in Northwest Ohio
Some folks erected their own version

and midwestern photographer Christopher Crawford documented two of them on his website:

The typography of all the crosses and the used material appear to be the same or similar, so it’s safe to assume it’s from the same people. Even if the Indiana cross is quite a few hours away from the other two documented crosses.
Thanks to Sammy from Boone, NC for sharing the location of the Indiana cross with me, that led me down a rabbit hole of new discoveries.
