Harrison Mayes Roadside Marker Updates

Every now and then, I receive an email from people who found the Mayes Marker Map (or MMM, as we call it here :)) helpful, and want to contribute new locations, sightings, or send in photos to document a marker’s current state.

I can’t express how grateful I am for this, because it helps document Harrison Mayes’ work, keeps it alive, and raises awareness that might help protect the remaining signs.

These contributions also remind me how many people live near these signs without knowing their story. What I’ve found by reading old newspaper articles or posts in local Facebook groups is that people are aware of these landmarks they’ve known forever—landmarks they pass by on their way to work. Most of the time, the reason these markers have survived is simply because people liked the message—“Prepare to Meet God” and “Jesus is Coming Soon”—but they don’t know who made them or that there are more of them.

That’s why I’m especially excited to share a new set of contributions. Thanks to Knoxville-based photographer Casey Fox, a new batch of photos has been added for individual marker locations in Middlesboro, TN; Speedwell, TN; and Tazewell, TN.

Write me an email if you have questions or want to contribute.
